You don’t get to see Santa decked out in flip flops and Elvis sunglasses very often, so we couldn’t pass up the chance to get a picture with “surfing Santa”. This was taken on the deck of the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club. These life saving clubs dot the coastline in most populated areas. Their primary function is to patrol the beach, provide lifeguards and offer ocean swimming activities for members. If you’re out early in the morning at the beach, you’ll see the club members in their surf club gear out in the water paddle boarding, ocean swimming or kayaking. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, they have their “little nippers” programs (you have to love that name) which is like swimming little league.
Many of the surf life saving clubs also offer restaurants of varying sizes. These places are the gems that most travel books don’t ever mention; you don’t need to be a member to eat in the restaurants and they often have the best views since they have to be directly on the beach. Prices are reasonable and if you stick to the basics you’ll be very pleased with your food. We loved the club in Noosa and had some great experiences there (next post: Olivia’s writes about winning the seafood raffle!).
